Backyard Ultra is a competition format for ultrarunning where runners complete a distance of 6.7 kilometers every hour, as many times as possible. Only the last runner to reach the start line and complete the lap wins, while all others are disqualified. If more than one person completes the final lap, all are disqualified and no winner is declared. This unique competition format requires strategic planning of both time and energy, and runners can use the breaks for rest and equipment maintenance.

Highlights

  • The runners cover 6.7 km in one hour, which corresponds to 4.167 miles, and can reach up to 100 miles in 24 hours.
  • The competition was created by Gary Cantrell, known as Lazarus "Laz" Lake, who has also organized other famous ultramarathons.
  • Participants have the opportunity to return to a basecamp every hour for rest and nutrition, which sets it apart from traditional ultramarathons.
